Inspiration Product

During the Parsons x Teen Vogue certificate I created a bag.  This was a project that spanned over a couple assignments and courses.  It started with an inspiration explosion where I gathered objects that caught my attention, arranged them and took a photo.  The colours, textures and images from the inspiration explosion inspired the initial design of the bag.

In my inspiration explosion I included a September Vogue issue, my favourite book, jewellery that was packaged in a glass bottle which I found on a trip to Greece, a picture of a skeleton with my drawing next to it, and my drawing of an eye

I drew the bag design on an app called Paper 23.  The colour combination I wanted to use was primarily light, neutral brown and dusty pink with possibly a hint of earthy green.

After I drew the design, I went fabric shopping.  I bought fabric swatches that matched a mood board I had made on my Pinterest titled Wild Flowers.  My mood board and inspiration explosion both influenced my choice of fabrics for the bag.  I chose a neutral canvas fabric for my mockup of the bag, which I also used as the base of my finished product.  By making the mockup bag I was able to determine the production cost for the finished product.

Using the information and knowledge I had gained by creating the mockup, I created a chart to calculate the production cost and retail prices for two different fabrics and all the fastenings and embellishments that would potentially be used to create the final version of the bag.

I chose to create the bag with fabric 2, which was the same fabric used to create the mockup bag.  This was the part I enjoyed the most, using my hands to create the final product.  Part of the requirement for the assignment was that the bag was to be made using striped fabric that you had created.  I embellished the bag with dusty pink ribbon and I used beads to create the strap for the bag.  I was very happy with how the end product looked and felt, I liked the materials I chose and the colour palette.

I created a chart to show the production cost and estimated retail price for the bag.  It was the same as the chart for fabric 2 because that is the fabric I chose to use for the bag. During this project I learned a lot about design and production.  The project took me through the whole process from inspiration, to design, to the research and buying, to creating mockups and determining production cost and value, to finally creating the product.
